Overview

As a derelict paints the face of a girl on a barroom floor, the plot is developed in a series of flashbacks: Robert Stevens, an artist engaged to marry Marion, a society girl, becomes charmed with a fisherman's daughter who poses for him. The society girl's brother brings dishonor upon the fisherman's daughter, and when she commits suicide the artist shields the brother. Stevens is blamed by his fiancée, who terminates their engagement. The artist becomes a derelict and is wrongfully imprisoned. Eventually Stevens is exonerated and reunited with Marion.

Daisy absconds with the jewels, but a vindictive detective, who has been following Daisy, thinks the heist is for real and tries to arrest her. Impresario Thomas Sullivan arrives in Ossawatomie, Kansas, to debut a new musical show written by local boy Gene Harris. After auditioning with a song by her bookkeeper boyfriend Brian McBride Sullivan hires Millicent Lloyd and takes her to New York City, where she becomes a famous singer. Brian, arriving in the city with a new opera, keeps his presence secret from Millicent until he has achieved success. But Harris suffering writer’s block steals Brian's work and presents it to Sullivan as his own. With the help of music publisher Gus Hertz, Brian exposes Harris and reclaims his composition. He and Millicent are reunited, and the opera goes on to enormous success.
