War Songs

Paul Schmidt sent me a set of five poems from a series called WAR SONGS. He treats the war in a brilliant and sarcastic way, evokes his seduction. Mark Bennett's score is itself provocative, languorous, and close to a waltz. The whole thing is a series of songs cast in the mode of melodrama, that is to say music in tandem with a narration. My contribution lies in the superimposition of war scenes, coupled with what I called an image of Gabriel: a young and handsome soldier, a personification of the good warrior, a protective image. He gives off strong impressions throughout the duration of the film. She makes him appear sometimes active and aggressive, sometimes asleep or beckoning. The film uses footage from the Vietnam War and World War II. They show soldiers marching, tanks rolling. Explosions reveal in passing our dear “Gabriel”.

Rommel's Treasure

The underworld of Cairo is alerted to certain moves of various people in the search for Rommel's treasure. Some are intent on the valuables, while others seek only the documents. The searchers, each working for individual reasons, are: von Brunner, an ex-officer of Rommel's staff who seeks the treasure to aid families of the fallen; Wells, a famous American news photographer out for a scoop; Mrs. Fischer, owner of a luxury riverboat nightclub, who seeks the documents for a foreign power, and Krikorian, pretending to be helping Mrs. Fischer but is really interested in making what he can for himself. Sofia, a cabaret star for Mrs. Fischer, is in love with von Brmmer and unwittingly endangers her life when Mrs. Fischer discovers she is helping von Brunner in his quest.

Johnny, You're Wanted

Returning late to London, Johnny gives a lift to an attractive female hitch-hiker. Some distance on, he stops to make a phone call and buy a coffee, but on returning to his cab finds the woman gone. Assuming she has hitched another ride, he continues on his way. A short time later he is flagged down by another driver, who has come across a woman lying by the roadside. The woman is Johnny's hitchhiker and she's dead.
