ART IN SMOG offers an intimate, philosophical glimpse of contemporary China, experienced through the work and lives of four artists and a curator. Footage from 1991 and 2016 documents a changing world. SU XINPING and XIA XIAOWAN were young graduates of the Central Academy of Fine Arts who dreamed of modernity in 1991. As intellectuals, they probed human nature and self-knowledge. Now, a deep unease pervades their visual images. MUSHI, a self-taught artist enamored of modern art, could not survive in Beijing and returned to his hometown, Chongqing. How has he made a living, then? CHEN HUI, a talented art student, fell in love with Xia Xiaowan. Twenty years later, she wants her own identity and career. CUI CANCAN, a quick-witted rural child, has seized the day to become a fast-talking international curator. The film is a visual record of China in the throes of transition.

Estamira is a 63-year-old woman who suffers from schizophrenia. She leads a tough life and has supported herself for the past 20 years by picking through garbage at the Jardim Gramacho Disposal Area in Rio de Janeiro. The film follows her starting in 2000, the year she begins treatment in a psychiatric clinic. At first, it is hard to understand her in her stream-of-consciousness sentences, delusions and obsessions. Gradually, however, we get to know her as a woman who can have quiet and lucid moments despite her illness.

The film shifts from heavy turbulence to suspended repetition—not as a path to completion, but as a study of the loop itself. Featuring a layered soundscape, the work asks the viewer to stare into the rotation until the noise becomes a mantra.

Good Morning, Mr. Orwell

In his book "1984", George Orwell saw the television of the future as a control instrument in the hands of Big Brother. Right at the start of the much-anticipated Orwellian year, Paik and Co. were keen to demonstrate satellite TV's ability to serve positive ends-- Namely, the intercontinental exchange of culture, combining both highbrow and entertainment elements. A live broadcast shared between WNET TV in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, linked up with broadcasters in Germany and South Korea, reached a worldwide audience of over 10 or even 25 million (including the later repeat transmissions).

The Statue of Giordano Bruno

This film was made out of the capture of a live animation performance presented in Rome in January 2005 by Pierre Hébert and the musician Bob Ostertag. It is based on live action shooting done that same afternoon on the Campo dei Fiori where the philosopher Giordano Bruno was burned by the Inquisition in 1600. A commemorative statue was erected in the 19th century, that somberly dominate the market held everyday on the piazza. The film is about the resurgence of the past in this place where normal daily activities go on imperturbably. The capture of the performance was reworked, shortened and complemented with more studio performances.
