UFMG's DESIGN WEEK – the documentary

The UFMG Design Week went by! But behind the good-looking Instagram posts, do you know how it all went down? We recorded some things during the rush to give you a sneak peek of the insides of the project! The UFMG Design Week is a student project funded by the PRAE 02/25 Call for Proposals. It was carried out by organized students from the Academic Center of Design (CADÊ) at the Federal University of Minas Gerais. We had the support of the Academic Directory of the School of Architecture and Design (da.ead); the Pro-Rectorate for Extension – PRAE; and the School of Architecture and Design of UFMG.

The King of Color

Spitfire: The Birth of a Legend

‘Spitfire— Birth of a Legend‘ tells the story of the Spitfire from a radical design on the drawing board to the fighter aircraft that became the symbol of Britain’s determination to fight on to victory. It celebrates the history of this acclaimed aircraft, the men who designed and built it, and those who flew and fought in it. The story, along with dramatic archive and colour film of aerial combat, graphically illustrates the appeal and fascination the Spitfire has maintained since it faced and fought the fighter and bomber formations of the Luftwaffe.

Teague: Design & Beauty

A documentary on the life and work of the American designer, Walter Dorwin Teague. It's the story of a poor young farm boy who travels to New York City to become an artist, but ends up creating the new profession of industrial design that helps shape modern America

Food & Design

It is a documentary on food design, redefining food through the lens of creativity and design. The film features interviewees from Italy, Spain, Taiwan, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

Valldaura: A Quarantine Cabin

A group of young architects, confined to a forest in Barcelona during the COVID crisis, explore the problems generated by the ambition of wanting to be completely self-sufficient.

Gunnar's Last Project

At 85, Icelandic design icon Gunnar Magnússon begins a final project with help from his daughter Tinna. As his health suddenly fails, she is left to complete the work herself, turning her father’s last creation into a daughter’s final gesture of love.

Everything Must Change: Piet Zwart

A fascinating documentary about Piet Zwart (1885–1977), an idiosyncratic and stubborn designer, who lived for innovation and prepared the way for the international success that is now known as Dutch Design. Piet Zwart worked as an interior and industrial designer, commercial typographer, photographer, critic and lecturer, playing a key role in defining the design climate in the Netherlands in the Twentieth Century. He is especially known for designing the famous ‘Piet Zwart’ kitchen for the Dutch company Bruynzeel: a kitchen that could be easily produced and consisted of standardized elements. His versatility and influence on present-day designers led the Association of Dutch Designers to award him the title of “Designer of the Century” in 2000.

Graphic Means: A History of Graphic Design Production

Up until just over 30 years ago, when the desktop computer debuted, the whole design production process would have been done primarily by hand, and with the aide of analog machines. The design and print industries used a variety of ways to get type and image onto film, plates, and finally to the printed page. Graphic Means is a journey through this transformative Mad Men-era of pre-digital design production to the advent of the desktop computer. It explores the methods, tools, and evolving social roles that gave rise to the graphic design industry as we know it today.

Henry Darger was so reclusive that when he died his neighbors were surprised to find a 15,145-page manuscript along with hundreds of paintings depicting The Story of the Vivian Girls, in What is Known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glodeco-Angelinnian War Storm, Cased by the Child Slave Rebellion.
